Holy Baptism

In Holy Baptism our gracious heavenly Father liberates us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; in the waters of Baptism we are reborn children of God and inheritors of eternal life. By water and the Holy Spirit we are made members of the Church which is the body of Christ. As we live with him and his people. we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. At Shepherd of the Hills we believe that people of any age can be brought to the waters of Baptism.

Baptism FAQ

How do I schedule a baptism? Please call the parish office at 815-385-4030. It is best to have a couple of dates in mind and know who your sponsors will be, as well as the correct spelling of their full name.

When can I schedule a baptism? Baptism can take place either at our Saturday 4:30 p.m. service or on Sunday mornings during our regular worship services of 8:00 a.m., 9:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

Can I schedule a baptism outside of Sunday morning? We believe that baptism is a time in which the congregation as a whole welcomes our newest member into arms. Deviation from Sunday morning baptism is granted by special circumstance only. Should you wish to conduct a baptism at a time other than Sunday morning please call the parish office to speak with our pastor.

Is there a cost or fee for baptism? There is no set fee for baptism. Many families make a donation in honor of the special day.

Do I have to attend a class? We do not require a baptismal class however, pastor will have a one on one conversation with you and/or the parents prior to the baptism to discuss the meaning of baptism. If you are new to the Lutheran faith you may consider attending one of our Small Catechism classes.

What do you wear when getting baptized? You are welcome to wear what you are most comfortable in or feel is appropriate. Children often wear white baptismal gowns or pant suits as a sign of new life.

What is a sponsors? Sponsors act as a mentor in the Lutheran faith. Sponsors join the parents at the font in response to God's connection with the baptized. Sponsors act in tandem with the parent(s) in their promises to teach, shape and nurture the newly baptized on their growing faith.

How many sponsors should I have? Two sponsors, one female and one male is customary. However, you are welcome to have any number of sponsors and of any gender that you wish.

If I was already baptized do I have to get baptized again? If you were previously baptized into the Christian faith under the triune God (The Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and using the element of water it is not necessary to be baptized again.

What do I do the day of my baptism? When you arrive at the church it is best to enter the Sanctuary on the left side. Near the front you will notice the Baptismal Font. For the convenience of everyone, we ask that you, as well as your sponsors, sit in the first few pews nearest the font. When it is time for the baptismal ceremony, Pastor will call you to the front by name at which time you will gather around the Baptismal Font and follow Pastor's lead.

Who holds the baby during the baptism? Mother, Father or one of the Sponsors are welcome to hold the baby. The choice is yours.

Can I take video or pictures during the baptism? You are welcome to document this special day in anyway you would like we just ask that you refrain from using flash or additional lighting and are respectful of the boundaries of the worship service.

Can I take pictures with the Pastor after the service? Yes, however please keep in mind that time is very limited between the 8:00 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. services and Pastor does need a brief break before beginning the next worship service.
